OUR STORY

The Covent Garden Opera Company became the Royal Opera House in 1946.

The Soloists of the Royal Opera House formed by Vasko Vassilev in 1994 quaintly reversed in 2004 to become the Covent Garden Soloists™ - but only in name.

In constitution and ambition, this was no reversal but a big step forward into frontiers beyond and above the origins of opera and its orchestra.

The group metamorphosed into this exciting phenomenon drawing in stars from different musical genres, contrasting performance platforms and complementary artistic schools.

Underlying instrumental virtuosity is always a fundamental character of the group but it is versatility and vivacity which distinguish Covent Garden Soloists™.  The group moves with fluidity through various creative performances whether interacting seamlessly with voices from the world’s greatest opera stages and the most authentic flamenco bars or with rock, jazz and pop instruments and their protagonists. Dance and choreography by some of the greatest soloists of the Royal Ballet such as the high leaping and toe-tapping Steven McCrae lend another form of dynamic energy to the group which has also been known to blur the lines of music not only with dance but with magic, acrobatics and arts of self-defence.

Covent Garden Soloists™ was the core and inspiration for Pamela Tan Nicholson's Trioperas which combined opera pathos with instrumental fireworks, and riveting dance with wide-ranging acrobatics, to earn the accolade of ‘quite simply live theatre at its best’.

Opera and Covent Garden have changed considerably since they first met in 1762. Audiences and their choice of entertainment continue to evolve; while the Covent Garden Soloists™ embrace change and the challenges change brings. Covent Garden Soloists™ is resident at L'Eliana Auditorium, offering opportunities for explorative collaborations in recordings, performance and production.

Covent Garden Soloists are proud of their heritage but are always excited to adapt to meet requests and to adopt new ideas. Since its formation, Covent Garden Soloists™ are determinedly a ‘moveable feast’ touring in different formations and sizes from a duo up to a full orchestra or a theatrical company for fully staged productions.
